'KLANKBEELD' / MUSIC DOCUMENTARIES & FILMS

Lovers of music, film and especially the combination of both… pay attention! It was written in the stars that Antwerp city cinema Cartoon's, with its now legendary musical past and Trix as the music center of Antwerp, would one day produce a beautiful love baby together.

Under the joint project Klankbeeld, they will program the most interesting documentaries and films 'with music' in Cartoon's and Lumière Antwerp from March 2022 onwards.

Will be screened in the Flemish cinema for the first time:

30.03.22 / ‘Freakscene - The story of Dinosaur Jr.’

The American indie rock band Dinosaur Jr. is a radical group with an unmistakeable sound. The film tells the story the three charismatic guys in the band: J. Mascis (vocals, guitar), Lou Barlow (bass) and Murph (drums).

“This warm-hearted profile of the US grunge-rockers doubles as a poignant rumination on friendship and personal growth – but gets its heft from the unpolished performance footage”The Guardian ★★★★

21.04.22 / ‘Other Music’

For 20 years indie record store Other Music was an influential hub of music culture in NYC. Featuring Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Interpol and more, the film reminds us that the spirit of the much-loved destination will live on.

“A love letter to a bygone place, concept and era” - Variety

19.05.22 / ‘Summer of Soul’

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The feature includes concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more.

"As music stars turn to movies as promotional tools, the Questlove project looks back to a golden age of filmed performances that the academy rarely acknowledges." - The New York Times
