Blackbird Sound invites Roots Daughters
This time the Blackbird is flying back and forth to Berlin to bring you the original Roots Daughters.
The Roots Daughters were established in 2009 by a duo of serious sound system addicts and roots music lovers from Pula (Croatia). They started out playing and promoting dub/roots music at Ljubljana`s Monday's Dub Lab evenings at legendary Autonomous Cultural Centre Metelkova Mesto (Slovenia).
After being part of the regional scene for some years, Julie continues their mission when she moved to Berlin in 2013. She meets Jahminta Zulu (Vintage Night Cologne) on the same musical frequency and they decide to join forces.
Heavily inspired by rastafari and Jamaican sound system culture, the sessions are a space of upliftment, sharing vibes, knowledge, developing skills and empowering one another. Both are passionate vinyl collectors who will make you experience Reggae Music in all it's beauty and versatility - from its foundations to recent releases.
Before the pandemic they were regularly organising events, creating a space and platform to express and represent female* activists in the scene. Now, with their new custom-built sound system they're ready to resume their work and take it to the next level.
Another goal is to give credit and pay tribute to the great female* artists which have been criminally underrated or unheard of in the past by playing their tunes and help spread the message in the music - Equal rights and justice for all!

The Roots Daughters is in 2009 opgericht door een duo van serieuze soundsystem-addicts en roots-muziekliefhebbers uit Pula (Kroatië). Ze begonnen met het spelen en promoten van dub/roots-muziek tijdens de Dub Lab-avonden op maandag in Ljubljana in het legendarische Autonoom Cultureel Centrum Metelkova Mesto (Slovenië).
Na enkele jaren deel uit te maken van de regionale scene, zet Julie haar missie voort toen ze in 2013 naar Berlijn verhuisde. Ze ontmoet Jahminta Zulu (Vintage Night Cologne) op dezelfde muzikale frequentie en ze besluiten hun krachten te bundelen.
Sterk geïnspireerd door rastafari en de Jamaicaanse soundsystem culture, zijn de sessies een ruimte van verheffing, het delen van vibes, kennis, het ontwikkelen van vaardigheden en het versterken van elkaar. Beiden zijn gepassioneerde vinylverzamelaars die je Reggae Music in al zijn schoonheid en veelzijdigheid zullen laten ervaren - van de oprichting tot recente releases.
Vóór de pandemie organiseerden ze regelmatig evenementen en creëerden ze een ruimte en platform om vrouwelijke* activisten in de scene te uiten en te vertegenwoordigen. Nu, met hun nieuwe, op maat gemaakte soundsystem, zijn ze klaar om hun werk te hervatten en naar een hoger niveau te tillen. Een ander doel is om eer te bewijzen aan en eer te bewijzen aan de grote vrouwelijke* artiesten die in het verleden crimineel werden onderschat of ongehoord waren door hun deuntjes te spelen en de boodschap in de muziek te verspreiden: gelijke rechten en gerechtigheid voor iedereen!
