Workshop: Axoloti with Andrew Claes

Andrew Claes (STUFF.) guides you through the wonderful world of the microcontroller platform for musicians par excellence: Axoloti.

Axoloti is a small, programmable music computer made in Belgium. The platform supports a visual programming environment in which you can create extensive music applications in a modular way (without writing code) including synthesizers, effect devices, MIDI processors and all kinds of controllers.

Think MAX/MSP or Reaktor in an Arduino-shaped box for musicians and DIYers.

In the first lesson the intriguing beast is extensively presented with real-life examples. No prior knowledge is required, but some basic knowledge about synthesizers and a little bit of jargon are of course desirable to get the most out of these lessons.

Andrew guides you through the installation procedure on your own laptop (Windows and Mac*) and together we build step by step a polyphonic subtractive synth that works without a computer!

We will then go into more detail about the possibilities of the so-called 'GPIO' connections on the Axoloti for making your own midi controller. Then we move on to discover the patcher and go through all the steps for building a basic sampler.

Again, all steps are taken together, from preparing samples in the free audio editor Audacity, to working with the different memory capacities of the Axoloti (SDRAM, SRAM and microSD card).

At the end of the workshop we integrate the new knowledge into our polyphonic synth from the first workshop. If all goes well, you'll go home with a capable digital polysynth with sampling and/or wavetable capabilities.

What would you need?
- Laptop with USB (Windows/Mac*/Ubuntu**).
- Headphones with mini-jack connection

Optional: Midi-controller, microSD card, card reader.

* The latest OSX version 'Catalina' 10.15 from 7 October 2019 is not yet supported
** proposed version: Ubuntu Linux 14.04 LTS
